Okra is not the most popular vegetable on the planet. In fact, I only fix it when I am eating alone as no other human living around me will eat it. Yet, this hot-and-humid-climate plant is sometimes considered a southern staple. It can be enjoyed in soups as a vegetable and thickener, sauteed with tomatoes and mixed with rice, or used in my favorite; good ol’ Louisiana gumbo.

But studies have shown that okra contains lectins, proteins that restrict cellular proliferation of breast cancer cells, are instrumental in the prevention of prostate cancer, stimulate apoptosis against malignant melanoma, and decreases the risk of lung cancer. It can be purchased as the great food it is, capsules, and/or liquid. But please make sure it is organic. The research is there, but just like with most fruits and vegetables, more information is needed. As always, please consult your physician and/or homeopathic professional before making any dietary or lifestyle changes.
